Coming next month, the Joseloff Gallery is proud to announce announce the 24th annual Alexander A. Goldfarb Student Exhibition, beginning on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, and officially opening with a public reception and awards presentation on Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 4-6 p.m. in the Joseloff Gallery. The exhibition will continue through April 14, 2013.

The Alexander A. Goldfarb Student Exhibition and Awards Presentation is held each year in the Joseloff Gallery. All students of the University of Hartford are invited to submit up to two works of art to be considered for the exhibition. Of the works chosen for the show, two undergraduate students are chosen to receive purchase prizes in the amount of $1,000 each. The winning students’ artwork becomes a part of the Goldfarb Memorial Collection, to be owned by the Hartford Art School and proudly displayed throughout the University, in offices and public spaces.

Alexander A. Goldfarb, a Hartford attorney and art aficionado, is remembered by many in the Hartford Art School community not just for his excitement and interest in the arts, but also for his generosity. Goldfarb generously endowed a fund at the Hartford Art School to support this annual exhibition and provide prize money for the students. It was his intention that the older students use the money to travel or go on to advanced training after graduation, and that the younger students might use the prize money to offset the expenses of schooling.

The first Juried Student Exhibition—as it was then called– opened in May of 1989 and featured a panel of guest jurors including Humphrey Tonkin, then president of the University of Hartford; Stuart Schar, dean of the Hartford Art School; and the two trustees of the Alexander A. Goldfarb Memorial Trust: Dr. Carter Pottash and Judge James Kinsella.

As the years have passed, some details of the exhibition have changed. The name changed from the Juried Student Exhibition to The Alexander A. Goldfarb Student Exhibition, and the jury process is now presided over by a single guest juror, a representative of the arts community, e.g., an artist, critic, or curator. Past jurors have included artists Cleve Gray (1992), Judy Moonelis (1998), Zoe Beloff (2002), and Clint Jukkala (2010), as well as curators Andrea Miller-Keller (1991), and Richard Klein (2009).

This year’s invited guest juror is painter and educational curator of ArtSpace New Haven, Martha Lewis. Primarily a painter and draftsperson, Lewis has been involved in a variety of projects including editing and printing her own fictional newspaper in Oxford, UK, leading groups of school children in making 6-foot totem poles on wheels from recycled materials, creating sets and costumes for a production of The Magic Flute and a producing a virtual book Glossary & Index from an outdated computer manual into which she inserted the history of the book and the history of the computer.

Lewis earned a BFA at Cooper Union in New York, and received her MFA from Yale University. Subsequently she has taught drawing through the college seminar program at Yale University, and at Columbia University.

In April, 2009 Lewis curated the exhibition Yarn Theory at PS122 Gallery in New York, which featured knitted and crocheted models, structures and objects created by artists, mathematicians and scientists. Martha’s work is in the collection of Nuffield College, Oxford, and Chapman University, Orange, CA, as well as in private collections in the US and Europe.

For more information, please visit Martha Lewis’s website at www.marthalewis.com

We apologize for being so late to officially announce our upcoming exhibition, but hopefully you’ve been to our home page and seen some of the amazing illustration that will be on view in the gallery beginning next week.

The exhibition will open on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. and the artists’ reception and public lecture will take place on Friday, February 8, 2013. The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. in Wilde Auditorium and the reception will start at 5 p.m. in the gallery. Read on for the full details in the official announcement.

We are proud to present the exhibition McCarty & Payne, featuring the work of the 2012/2013 Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chairs in illustration, Peter McCarty and C. F. Payne, in the gallery from January 22 through February 24, 2013.

The Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts was established at the Hartford Art School in 1988 for the purpose of bringing in artists of international reputation as faculty of the art school. The chair is rotated among departments, with individuals teaching either a semester or academic year. One of the few endowed chairs in the visual arts, it has become an important part of the school. Students have the opportunity to learn directly from artists whose work is chronicled in contemporary art history.

Upon entering the gallery, you will see an assortment of C. F. Payne’s bright, playful portraits of well-known stars, political and sports figures. 48 of Payne’s illustrations will be on view including portraits of President Obama, Jack Nicholson, and Derek Jeter, which have appeared in TIME Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, and others. Continuing into the back section of the gallery, you will find the sweet, subtle, book illustration of Peter McCarty. 35 of McCarty’s illustrations will be on display, including work from Caldecott Honor Book Hondo and Fabian, and New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year, Henry in Love (both books written and illustrated by McCarty). In-process work by both artists will also be on display showing the behind-the-scenes steps taken while creating these delightful works of art.

In addition to the exhibition, there will be a public lecture, including both of the artists in the show, held on Friday, February 8, 2013 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Wilde Auditorium, directly followed by a public reception in the Joseloff Gallery from 5-7 p.m.

McCarty & Payne was organized and curated by Lisa Gaumond, managing director of the Joseloff Gallery. This exhibition was made possible, in part, through the Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts endowment at the Hartford Art School.
